The Pittsburgh Hornets are pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2013 USA Hockey National Championships for the Tier I U14, U16 and U18 divisions. Once again Robert Morris Island Sports Center will be the host facility. We look forward to making this a special event for the Hornet's and all the participating teams.
In what can only be described as a historical whirlwind over the last month, Brendan Saad has made the Chicago Blackhawks as an 18 year old. Brandon's accomplishment brings a number of rare feats.
He will be by far the youngest Western Pennsylvania player to make the NHL. Along with Ryan O'Riley of the Colorado Avalanche in 2009, he becomes only the 2nd non-first round pick to make an NHL team as an 18 year old in the last few decades. He is the first American born non first round pick to make an NHL roster at 18. He joins a short list of Americans who have made NHL teams at 18 along with Cam Fowler, Patrick Kane, Bobby Carpenter, Phil Housley, Ed Olczyk, Tim Connely, and Tom Barrasso.
The Blackhawks face the Dallas Stars on Friday at 8:30pm. Good luck Brandon
A very competitive weekend of hockey was enjoyed by all, as the New Jersey Rockets, Team Maryland and Pittsburgh Hornets ’99 PeeWee Major teams participated in the Inaugural Patriots Challenge Hockey Tournament. The event was hosted by the Hornets at the RMU Island Sports Center benefiting the Wounded Warriors Project. All the players, families and fans will remember the true meaning of the weekend, as the new hockey season begins – The Heroes and Victims of September 11, 2001 and all the sacrifices that our Armed Forces have made to protect our Liberty and Freedom.
The teams competed for the Patriots Challenge Cup, donated by the Mascali family of the New Jersey Rockets, in honor of all the heroes of September 11th. The Rockets Jack Mascali, Uncle Joe Mascali, was a New York fireman, Rescue 5 Staten Island, N.Y., that was killed that day while saving people at the World Trade Center.
The round-robin portion of the weekend ended with each team having one win & one loss. The New Jersey Rockets defeated Team Maryland to advance to the championship game against Pittsburgh. The Hornets defeated the Rockets in the championship game to capture the Patriots Challenge Cup, avenging an earlier loss to New Jersey in the first game of the weekend. Family, friends and fans were treated to very competitive, high energy games throughout the weekend.
As the National Hockey League along with its member clubs New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals learned about the weekend, they all generously donated great hockey memorabilia items including autographed Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Zac Parise jerseys, signed pucks and sticks along with other items highlighted by the use of a Luxury Suite for a New Jersey Devils game during the upcoming season for an auction to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. With proceeds from the auction and donations, the weekend raised over
$ 12,000 for the WWP. Plans are already underway to expand next year’s Patriots Challenge, which will be held in New Jersey at the Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils.
The weekend was much more than great hockey – each of the teams also participated in a community service project. The Hornets and Rockets each prepared care packages for members of the United States Armed Forces, while Team Maryland’s project supported the Fisher House organization, whose purpose is to help military families in need of aid. The players want to express their appreciation and gratitude to the soldiers for their courageous service and sacrifice. The positive message that the players learned during the Patriots Challenge is that patriotism, heroism and sacrifice, are the true enduring legacies of September 11th.
All proceeds from the weekend will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. The WWP exists to honor and empower wounded warriors who incurred service-connected injuries on or after September 11, 2001.
The tragic events of September 11th are often the reason warriors say they felt a sense of duty to volunteer for the military. These individuals chose to defend our country, which is why we honor them.
